Documentary and narrative work with a cinematographer's eye
D. Winston Media works on documentaries and films as director, director of photography and camera and aerial unit, from the U.S. Virgin Islands and around the world. Founder Dwight Winston is a four-time Emmy-nominated cinematographer.
We worked on The Boy from St. Croix, the documentary about NBA legend Tim Duncan directed by his brother Scott Duncan, which held its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival in October 2025. Dwight was director of photography on the feature Timeless: A Virgin Islands Love Story, and our credits include the feature Scheme Queens 2 and a documentary for Antilles School's 75th anniversary.
What we bring to a documentary
- Interviews lit and framed to hold up on a big screen.
- Vérité coverage that stays out of the way of real moments.
- Aerial cinematography for scale and place.
- Archival integration and festival-ready finishing: edit, color and delivery.
Telling Caribbean stories
Many of the stories we tell are rooted in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean: their people, their history and their place in the world. Being based here means trust and access in the community, and the local knowledge to film respectfully and well.
Our approach
Good documentaries are built on trust. We spend time with subjects before the camera comes out, keep crews small so real moments can happen, and light interviews so they feel intimate and still look cinematic. In the edit, we shape the story around what people actually said and did.
Formats we work in
- Feature-length documentaries for festivals and streaming.
- Short documentaries and branded documentary content.
- Institutional and anniversary films for schools, organizations and families.
- Narrative feature films, as director of photography and camera unit.
Planning a shoot in the Virgin Islands
A few things help every Caribbean production run smoothly:
- Season and weather. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Shoots in that window need flexible weather days built into the plan. Trade winds and passing showers are normal year-round, so we schedule key shots and aerials with backup windows.
- Light. Being close to the equator, the islands get strong overhead sun in the middle of the day. Golden hour comes and goes quickly, so we plan hero shots around sunrise and sunset and use the midday hours for interiors, interviews and coverage.
- Getting around. St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix and Water Island are linked by ferry, seaplane and short flights, and the British Virgin Islands are a boat ride away. We plan crew and gear moves so travel doesn't eat into shoot time.
- Permits and approvals. Location permits and airspace approvals take time. Share your dates early and we'll build approvals into the schedule.
